Cytat:
This is an interview with Albert that appeared in the March issue of Spin:

ALBERT HAMMOND JR.--by Diane Vadino

Have the Strokes broken up? Some are speculating about the New York rockers now that shaggy guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has just made his solo debut, Yours to Keep--which happens to sound like the Strokes with a bigger, happier, poppier heart. A few hours before kicking off a five-week tour opening for Incubus, Hammond, 26, seems particularly upbeat about the prospect of going it alone (well, with his friends drummer Matt Romano and bassist Josh Lattanzi). "There are people out there, people who are better than me, who didn't have the opportunities I did, and it just didn't happen for them," Hammond says. "I'd hate me if I heard me not being positive about what was going on in my life."

Confirm or deny: The Strokes are dead.
Of course not. We just had a hard year, out biggest year of touring since we've been a band, andy everyone wanted to take a break. somethims you want to reinvent or rethink what you want to do. I just happened to use my time off to play some shows.

What did you need to say on your own that you couldn't say with the Strokes?
I didn't know what I wanted to say [at first], but when I went back to my album, it sounded like it was about someone going down a bad path and realizing they can change.

Did you ever consider writing these songs for the Strokes?
I wasn't even [planning on] making a record. It was more what I did in my free time, like "I'm going to have songs to show my friends that are better quality than my demos." But I went to record a song, and I liked it, so I recorded another. And on the eighth song, I realized I had a record. Touring was like that too. We were like, "We'll just put this out in the U.K. and won't do any press." Then it was, "We'll do a little low-key word-of-mouth press." Then it's like, "All right, I'll release it in Europe, too, and how about Japan?" Then Incubus called and I was like, "I can't say no now. I've started this fucking giant snowball."

You and Incubus don't seem like a natural fit.
I just thought this was a great way to reach people who might never hear my music. The cool thing about having a opener is to have them be different from the band. It's like going to school on the first day; you don't know who's going to be your friend or what's going to happen, but you gotta go to find out.

Is it harder to promote something you've created yourself rather than with a band?
It's easier to be in a band--That's why people like being in bands. [On your own] you have insecurities. I ask myself, "Am I embarrassing myself?" But I have days where I think, "This is amazing." We did a show in Glasgow where everybody was singing along and having so much fun, so I asked if everybody was having a good time. But it was only three songs in, so I guess that was too early to ask. I actually thought it was going to be a lot worse, people calling out names or not digging it. My biggest fear was they were going to boo or hate me.

If that happened, you could always fall back on a careed as a stylist. You've crafted quite a look.
I've always liked to look a certain way bacause I've always wanted people to know I played music, even before I actually was playing music. No one crafted my look--when I was 15, I had a friend whoses style I liked, and I took it and made it into my own thing. By now, I know what I want: to find people who will make [clothes] from scratch.

Clearly this is the point in your career when you lauch your own clothing label.
That seems to frustrating. Maybe I have this idea for a cut on a suit, but to the rock world, if you do that, it's like you're selling out. I imagine what'd be great is to mix four or five people in the rock business who are uniquely different and make [clothes with them] in one unified line. If Kanye West can do it, I can do it.
